Acura integra ls manual transmission for sale
The long-awaited return of the Acura Integra brings a 200-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and, praise Acura, a manual transmission. Kristin Shaw

Acura announced the return of its venerated Integra at Monterey Car Week nine months ago, and the joy could be heard from the throats of fans the world over. The Japanese brand has been holding onto this nameplate for 22 years, and finally, it’s back. Acura essentially created this segment of hot-hatch sedans and is hoping it can turn the market on its head all over again. The new Integra might just be able to make it happen.

The Integra was a hot ticket in the 1980s and 1990s, but faded in the DotCom era and was replaced with the RSX (still called Integra back in Japan) in late 2001. That car failed to draw in new buyers and was quietly dropped in 2006. The new version aims to recapture that excitement, its new turbocharged engine leading the charge. With 200 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque, the 2023 version jumps off the line eagerly and has plenty of energy to keep things interesting.

Marketed toward younger buyers, the 2023 Integra is affordable, starting at $31,895. Even fully outfitted—including all the options and the choice of a six-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT)—it tops out at $36,895. Driving home a performance-minded Acura for less than $37,000 is an enticing proposition, particularly one that feels like a pricier vehicle from behind the wheel.

As a brand, Acura launched in 1986 with two models: the Legend and the Integra. The former was was meant as a proper luxury car, but the Integra was aimed at up-and-coming professionals who might otherwise have chosen an entry-level BMW, a niche filled by today’s 2 Series Gran Coupe. Though it used many parts from the humble-pie Civic, the recipe was a winner and the original Integra a gateway to the brand for many consumers.

Excitement began to build internally when the idea of bringing it back started taking shape five or so years ago. Icould see why while driving the snappy, front-wheel drive Integra on winding roads between Austin, Texas and deep into Hill Country in Johnson City.

It’s clear that there’s some Civic DNA in the Integra, and indeed it shares its platform with the new-for-2022 Civic, but the interior feels more upscale and the styling and feel are well differentiated. Acura

New Integra, Familiar Vibes

Driving the 2023 version of the legendary Integra feels like slipping into a new version of the beloved jacket you’ve had for years. The Acura team did its homework and understands what its customers want with this updated car. Consider how hot the crossover and three-row SUV market have been in the last several years and the Integra may have seemed like a gamble. After all, the sedan is dead, some people say. However, this five-door hot hatch transcends the boring sedan mold.

Acura is going upstream toward the younger market with this car. And so far, the gambit is working because the first two months of production sold out quickly. And not only that, but more than 65 percent of the buyers chose the manual transmission. Moreover, a promising sign for Acura is that half of the total buyers so far are new to the Honda group altogether.

This front-wheel drive five-passenger car competes with the Volkswagen GTI, and by all rights, the VW should have the edge. It comes with a seven-speed manual (compared to the Integra’s six-speed), 241 horses to the Integra’s 200, and 274 lb-ft of torque over the Acura’s 192. And yet, I’d choose the Integra and here’s why: it’s more refined and upscale. It’s the difference between sitting in an expensive recliner and a folding chair.

2022 Acura Integra Trims and Features

Acura previewed a “frameless” diamond pentagon grille on the Type S Concept, and the brand adopted that look for the new Integra. Inside, the diamond shape repeats in the criss-cross pattern within the vents, accented by a slim knob to adjust the flow. The daytime running lights wrap around the side familiarly.

The 2023 Integra is offered in six colors: Performance Red Pearl, Apex Blue Pearl, Platinum White Pearl, Lunar Silver Metallic, Liquid Carbon Metallic, and Majestic Black Pearl. I’ve seen the white, gray, and blue shades, and the latter is a stunning Lapis that stands out more than the other colors on the palette. It’s a shade worthy of the return of the Integra.

The 2023 Integra comes standard at base level with a seven-inch touchscreen, 10.2-inch digital gauge display, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a USB-A port, power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and even a moonroof. All Integras are equipped with hill start assist, which is particularly handy with the manual transmission.

Manual transmissions are an endangered species these days, but Acura has seen fit to continue offering them on the Integra. Volkswagen also offers a stick, but BMW’s 2 Series and the Mercedes-Benz CLA don’t. Acura

Upgrading to the A-Spec and Technology package adds rain-sensing wipers, wireless charging, a head-up display, and a 530-watt, 16-speaker premium audio system by ELS Studio.

From an aesthetic perspective alone, there are several notable differences. The A-Spec trim adds stainless steel pedals, red gauge needles, and red contrast stitching on the steering wheel, console and shifter base. With the Technology Package, you’ll also get a four-way power passenger seat, along with power lumbar controls in the driver’s seat, microsuede inserts and stitching unique to the trim.

But Isn’t the Integra Just a Fancier Civic?

Built on Honda’s global small-car architecture, the Integra starts with a solid base and riffs from there. Everything up from the chassis is unique to Integra, from the structure to the design. The Integra’s body is stiffer than the Civic and is longer and wider, sharing only the wheelbase with its less-expensive sibling. Because the liftgate was essential to the reboot design, Acura added structure to compensate.

It’s worth noting that the optional CVT transmission is lifted straight from the base Civic. In this form, the Integra takes a big step down in appeal. While it’s perfectly fine, reliable, and tuned for precision, it has less of the zest of its manual counterpart. If you were to drive the Integra with the CVT first and never put your right hand on the manual gear shifter, you’d probably be satisfied with the performance. But I didn’t, and I’m not. There’s no question that the three-pedal version of the Integra got all of the personality while the CVT variant tags along behind.

Acura is quite open about the new Integra’s mission as a gateway performance vehicle. It’s designed to ignite (and reignite) driving passion in “young urban professionals” just like the 1986 original. Acura

Three drive modes are accessible with a quick flick of the wrist. In comfort mode, the drive is more compliant and supple, and the steering is lighter. You wouldn’t be disappointed by sticking it in comfort mode and leaving it there. For a more spirited drive, sport mode activates a stiffer suspension and steering that gives the Integra enough grace and space to carve canyons or tackle rolling hills. I expected to like the car best in Sport mode but found that Normal mode suited me very well, as it’s right in between the two. It’s a nice blend for a balanced baseline.

And let me answer the big question: With a manual transmission, is it as good as the wildly popular Civic Si? Yes. The commonality is clear, but everything from the tuning to the software is unique to the Integra.

If I had a new driver in the house, I’d absolutely get a Civic Si or Acura Integra to teach them how to drive a manual. The gear shifting is forgiving and supple, and even when I left it in third gear to climb a small hill, the car graciously pulled without feeling stressed.

Living with the New Integra

The Integra is an astonishing bargain for this price, but with a caveat: It’s only worth it with the manual transmission, which means you’ll have to spring for the top trim for that option alone.

One feature the Civic Si brings to the table that the Integra lacks is the gear number display inside the tachometer. That tiny touch makes it easy for drivers to see what gear they’re in, and I missed it on the Integra. It seems like a small detail that would be easy to add.

Road noise is evident when traveling at speeds above 55 mph, which is fair. Even so, it’s a pleasant ride that allowed me to test the limits of the upgraded ELS Studio audio system, which is impressive. I highly recommend cranking out whatever playlist inspires you because the sound is top-notch.

2023 Integras should start arriving at Acura dealers this June. If interest in the Civic Si is prologue, there should be strong demand. Acura

I tip my hat to Acura for including a generous suite of safety and driver-assist features even at the base level of the new Integra. Every car gets adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, forward collision warning, blind spot warning, rear cross warning, pedestrian detection, collision mitigation braking system, traffic jam assist, traffic sign recognition, auto high-beams and a multi-view rear camera with dynamic guidelines. The only feature lacking if you choose a manual transmission is adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow.

Acura has succeeded in resurrecting a beloved dinosaur without the horrors of Jurassic Park. The new Integra lives up to its storied name, and it still proffers the fun ride it promises; that is, as long as you get the manual. It’s worth the upgrade.

Does the Acura Integra come in manual?

It comes with a seven-speed manual (compared to the Integra's six-speed), 241 horses to the Integra's 200, and 274 lb-ft of torque over the Acura's 192. And yet, I'd choose the Integra and here's why: it's more refined and upscale.

Does Integra LS have VTEC?

The LS and GSR are two very different Integras. Both are actually trims of the Integra product line, along with the RS, GS and SE. The LS is very similar to the latter three in terms of performance, as they all come with the same B18B1 non-VTEC engine. It generates 142 hp at 7000 rpm.

Will the 2022 Acura Integra have a manual transmission?

The (vast) majority of new Integra buyers are choosing the six-speed manual option. Last year, Acura's dramatic announcement that the celebrated Integra nameplate would be making a return in 2022 set the automotive world abuzz.

Is an Acura Integra fast?

The top speed of the Acura Integra is 135 mph to go along with a 0-60 mph clip of just 4.5 seconds.
