Re-gluing rear view mirror, '01 A4

If you ever find yourself in this odd situation. Yesterday my rear view mirror fell off. Instead of the metal disk, which is glued to the glass and to which the mirror attaches, separating from the glass, glass was fused to the metal disk, so a disk of glass, about half the thickness of the windshield, separated with the metal disk. The outside of the windshield was unaffected. I think the disk is supposed to turn 90 degrees to come out of the mirror? In any case, the disk was covered with glass and I could not get the disk to turn or otherwise release. The glass on the disk fit well into the area of the windshield it tore from, but how to re-attach it with the whole mirror, holding it in place long enough for glue or cement to set? A plastic storage container with sofa pillows worked to hold the mirror tightly up against the windshield. I used epoxy and let it set overnight. It's made it through about 75 miles of driving so far, and the windshield looks solid.

If it’s still under warranty , and no cost to you, then let them fix it however they want to.

If it’s your money , take it to a business that replaces windshields .

They will Have access to much better glue and will have experience using it .

Also if your car is no Longer under warranty and You’re paying for the maintenance and repairs Find A good independent shop, and stay away from the high priced stealership

Rearview Mirror Fell Off!
2013 S4, 9 months old with 3,600 miles. Rearview mirror has always been a little shaky from the day I picked up the car.
The slightest road bump would make it vibrate more than normal.
Last night it just fell off the windshield. WTF? Seems strange for car of this quality and build. Obviously, will be calling the dealer.
Anyone experience this? Curious to know what the fix is? Hoping this doesn't turn into a service department shit-storm.....
Or worse, windshield replacement. Thanks for any advice or comments.

Seems like a simple mistake, and not something that happened to the masses. I'm sure the service dept will make it all better.

I have never had to deal with this. However, if it was shaky from the very day I picked it up, I'd have brought it back to the dealership the next day for it to be fixed... not 9 months after the fact.

I'd let them replace the windshield. I was on Audi.com and saw the compass and windshield come as one part. Them just getting another rear view and gluing it on there might not work but its possible. Maybe if they give you a new one with windshield it won't be defective this time. Do you have compass or regular rear view? I think all if them have compass right?

Where did it fall off? There are a few pieces if information we need before we can help. It's nearly three pieces:
The sticker/mount part on the glass
The female clasp( attached to the "sticker" and twists licks with the actual mirror)
Then the mirror itself

The mount completely detached from the windshield. The entire assembly was hanging from 2 wire bundles that I easily removed by their plugs.
The only thing left on the windshield is a disc of jelly like material which is for the rain sensor from what I've read.
It has compass, auto dimming, rain sensor.....it would be strange to think they would have to replace an entire windshield in order to fix this issue.
I did read in some old threads they have an outside company like Safelite come in and re-mount the assembly. If there are any cracks in the glass,
then they will replace the windshield. No cracks in my glass. Would rather not face a windshield replacement with it's possible issues.
I was more curious if any other 13 owners have the issue, and what the dealer might do to fix it. Guess I'll find out tomorrow morning.

Crazy, yeah take it to the dealer. Klaus must have had a hangover when he worked in your rear view mirror or you park in 140 degree direct sunlight lol!

Probably didn't get it seated properly at the factory assembly line......and with the heat we've been having here, probably softened it enough to have gravity take over.

That's what I was thinking.... factory defect by defective installer! It has been really hot in NYC..... what, there are no hot summers in Germany?

Happened to me as well, it was hanging off when I went to pick it up at the dealer. They ended up installing a new windshield. Here's the thread I started about it.

I'm not sure on the science of the circular clear gel and the mirror...it does have something to do w/the rain sensor. I've yet to research that.
The piece that the mirror attaches to that is glued to the windshield is already glued to the replacement windshield.
They did try to glue it back on...the second time I brought it back it was the Safelite guy that said it needs a new windshield. If they do glue it back on, check it by adjusting the mirror to it's limits with a little pressure.
No issues seen yet. I hosed it down to check for leaks...drove is a pretty good rain the other day, no leaks. Ran it up to 85 MHP w/no radio, or A/C fans running...didn't hear any excessive wind noise. And the mirror is pretty solid. No issues w/rain sensors, compass or auto dimming.
I do know the the windshield cost ~$700...not including installation.

Bump -my mirror just fell off, but it's not the adhesive/windshield problem people described here, it basically just popped off the mounting plate that's on the windshiled. I went to adjust it and it came off in my hand. Nothing seems broken but I can't get it back on, anybody know how?
Failing that, how do I take the wire connecter thing apart so the mirror isn't hanging by the wires? I didn't want to force it and break it but I don't see how you undo it.

It goes on at a clocked angle. You need to turn mirror mount like 90 degrees or something like that, clip it in and them twist it locked. Then you put all the plastic cover parts back on.
Don't quote me on that degree angle, but I know it doesn't just snap in unless you clock it a bit. Look at the tabs and the slats those tabs/clips slide into. It'll make sense.

BTW, you will need to take that rounded black cover off the bottom of the mirror to be able to clock it properly. It snaps off if you do it gently.

edit: well I finally got that off without breaking it. No luck so far getting this thing back together, any more tips appreciated.

Line up the metal clips with the holes (approx 25 degrees off vertical), push in and twist approx 25 degrees clockwise till the clips snap into place and the mirror is vertical again.
You can then jiggle the sleeve back over the wiring loom and snap into place.

Finally got it thanks. Dead simple once you get the tabs and the slots lined up right. If anybody needs their mirror put back on give me a call, I'm an expert now!

^^^ Lol, I guess my degrees were a little bit off, but that's the gist of it. The first time you do it it'll make you feel stupid. Then once it's on, you'll think... What a fucking stupid design... and know damn well that it'll probably snap back off one day and since that point forward you're super careful adjusting it if any. lol

What do I do if my rear view mirror fell off?

Pick up a rearview mirror adhesive-kit from your local auto parts store. Remove any leftover adhesive from the last mirror using rubbing alcohol. Apply a small amount of adhesive to the back of the new mirror. Attach the new mirror by pressing it firmly into place and holding it for a few seconds.
