You may renew your adult driver license or ID card at any time prior to the expiration date - you shouldn't wait until it expires‚ online renewals aren't possible if your license is expired over one year. Non-commercial driver licenses and instruction permits can be renewed without testing up to one year after the license/permit expires.

Online renewal FAQs

I’m over 80. Can I renew my driver license online?

Yes, you can renew online. Coloradans who are older than 80 and renewing electronically will need to upload to myDMV.Colorado.gov a signed statement (DR 2498) from an optometrist or ophthalmologist attesting that the person has had an eye examination within the preceding 6 months and attesting to the results of the examination.

I’m older than 21 but younger than 80. What do I need to renew my driver license or ID card online?

Coloradans who are between 21 and 80 must attest that they have had an eye examination within one year before the renewal, if renewing electronically. The self attestation is part of the onscreen process and doesn’t require a supporting document to be uploaded.

I’m under 21. Can I renew my driver license or ID card online?

No, the Driver's License Electronic Renewal By Seniors Act (HB21-1139) didn’t allow for this age group to renew online. Coloradans younger than 21 were previously able to renew their driver license or credentials online due to an emergency order, which has since expired.

I’m concerned with my relative’s ability to drive safely. What should I do?

Coloradans who are concerned about a family member’s ability to drive should email for information about a re-examination request due to physical or mental constraints. The email should include name and DOB of driver, reason for concern and name and relationship to the driver. Any driver who is required to complete a reexamination has the right to know who submitted the reexamination request to the Department by performing a record request. More information on motor vehicle records can be found on this page.

Who can submit a re-examination request?

Immediate family, law enforcement and medical professionals can submit a request for re-examination.
