TracFone is a mobile phone service with several different options. The service is prepaid and you actually buy minutes in advance, as opposed to having a contract and monthly bill. How TracFone Works

You can purchase a phone through the company, and then activate and load it with minutes. This is a common route as the phones are often packaged with minute cards at retail locations. Activating TracFone Online 

The online TracFone setup is pretty painless. You simply head to the TracFone website and click the Activate option in the main menu. It will ask what type of device you are using and offer two primary options. Select the TracFone device option if you've purchased one of their phones or choose the I'm Bringing My Own Smartphone option for your own phone. If you own one, it has a SIM card already. If not, you'll need a TracFone SIM to move forward. The online system will prompt you to get a SIM or enter your previous carrier SIM to unlock before moving forward. You'll need to enter the SIM number as well. After completing the SIM information, you will need to purchase a plan. You can do a once off or do a recurring, auto reload type plan. After you have the plan, you will run through a quick phone setup process by following several prompts. Then the phone goes live and you can use your minutes.

Activating by Phone  

As an alternative to the online system, you can activate by phone. The TracFone website has a number you can call and it will run you through the same prompts as the online system. It takes about the same amount of time to get everything setup through the phone system. This is ideal if you do not have an internet connection accessible.
