Eomer : What business does an Elf, a Man, and a Dwarf have in the Riddermark? Speak quickly!

Gimli : Give me your name, Horse-master, and I shall give you mine.

Eomer : [dismounts his horse]  I would cut off your head, Dwarf, if it stood but a little higher from the ground.

Legolas : [fits an arrow to his bow at lightning speed]  You would die before your stroke fell.

[Rohirrim point their spears at Legolas]

Aragorn : [signals for Legolas to lower his weapon]  I am Aragorn, son of Arathorn. This is Gimli, son of Glóin, and Legolas of the Woodland Realm. We are friends of Rohan, and of Théoden, your King.

Eomer : Théoden no longer recognizes friend from foe. Not even his own kin.

[takes off helmet]

Eomer : Saruman has poisoned the mind of the king and claimed lordship over these lands. My company are those loyal to Rohan, and for that we are banished. The White Wizard is cunning. He walks here and there, they say, as an old man hooded and cloaked. And everywhere his spies slip past our nets.

Aragorn : We are no spies. We track a party of Uruk-Hai, westward across the plain. They have taken two of our friends captive.

Eomer : The Uruks are destroyed. We slaughtered them during the night.

Gimli : But there were two Hobbits! Did you see two Hobbits with 'em?

Aragorn : They would be small. Only children to your eyes.

Eomer : We left none alive. We piled the carcasses and burned them.

Gimli : Dead?

Eomer : I am sorry.

[Éomer whistles a signal]

Eomer : Hasufel! Arod! May these horses bear you to better fortune than their former masters. Farewell.

[puts on helmet, mounts his horse]

Eomer : Look for your friends. But do not trust to hope. It has forsaken these lands.

Eomer : How long has it been since Saruman bought you? What was the promised price, Grima? When all the Men are dead you would take your share of the treasure?

[Wormtongue looks at Eowyn]

Eomer : Too long have you watched my sister. Too long have you haunted her steps.

[Eomer is seized by two guards]

Wormtongue : You see much, Eomer son of Eomund. Too much.

[Eomer is beaten by the guards]

Wormtongue : You are banished forthwith from the Kingdom of Rohan... under pain of death.

Eomer : You have no authority here! Your orders mean nothing!

Wormtongue : Oh, but this order does not come from me. It comes from the King. He signed it this morning.

[Shows Eomer the banishment order, signed by Theoden's seal]

Gandalf : He's suffered a defeat, yes, but... behind the walls of Mordor, our enemy is regrouping.

Gimli : Let him stay there. *Let him rot!* Why should we care?

Gandalf : Because ten-thousand Orcs now stand between Frodo and Mount Doom. I've sent him to his death.

Aragorn : No. There is still hope for Frodo. He needs time... and safe passage across the plains of Gorgoroth. We can give him that.

Gimli : How?

Aragorn : Draw out Sauron's armies. Empty his lands. Then we gather our full strength and march on the Black Gate.

Eomer : We cannot achieve victory through strength of arms.

Aragorn : Not for ourselves. But we can give Frodo his chance if we keep Sauron's Eye fixed upon us. Keep him blind to all else that moves.

Legolas : A diversion.

Gimli : Certainty of death, *small* chance of success... What are we waiting for?

Gandalf : Sauron will suspect a trap. He will not take the bait.

Aragorn : [knowingly]  No, I think he will.

AUSTIN, TEXAS - MARCH 12: Karl Urban, from the series The Boys poses at the Variety Studio at SXSW 2022 at JW Marriott Austin on March 12, 2022 in Austin, Texas. (Photo by Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images for Variety)

There was a time when Karl Urban was one of the most chronically underrated actors in Hollywood, but those days are long gone. Despite Urban being solid in just about every major film or show he’s appeared in, from Thor: Ragnarok to Xena: Warrior Princess to Star Trek and beyond, it wasn’t until The Boys that he became a household name. Urban is one of the breakout stars in Amazon’s subversive superhero show, where he plays a guerilla fighter pushing back against corrupt supes owned by corporate interests.

We can trace Urban’s steady rise back to Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Urban played Éomer, one of the leaders of the riders of Rohan. Speaking to The Guardian, Urban reflected on how getting hired for The Lord of the Rings changed the course of his life.

Karl Urban “just happened to be in Peter Jackson’s face” when he was casting Éomer

Urban recounted how in his early days as an actor, he relocated from his native New Zealand to Australia in hopes of getting bigger film roles. He almost immediately regretted it. “It was brutal,” he said. “I was very adamant that I wanted to work internationally, to work with the best calibre of film-maker that I could, but it was probably one of the toughest years of my life. I was actually questioning if I really wanted to do this.”

Fortunately, Urban got an offer on a project filming in New Zealand, which prompted him to change gears once again. And it was this decision that lead to him getting cast in The Lord of The Rings, something he credits with changing his life.

“I’m a firm believer in the philosophy ‘An opportunity neglected does not often return’,” the actor said. “So I went back to New Zealand and did a bunch of New Zealand films. One of them was a little film called The Price of Milk, which was directed by Harry Sinclair. Harry was a good friend of Peter Jackson, so he took a rough cut down to show Peter. And I just happened to be in Peter’s face when he was looking for someone to cast as Éomer in The Lord of the Rings.”

This sounds like one of those casting tales made in heaven. If not for Urban as Éomer, who would have been there when the Westfold fell? Who would have rallied the riders to Helm’s Deep? We don’t even want to guess.

You can see Karl Urban in season 3 of The Boys, airing now on Prime Video.
