Samsung galaxy note 8 gps problem

If you are having issues with GPS service on your Samsung Galaxy Galaxy S8 or Note 8, here are a few ways to fix it. Lately, a number of Galaxy S8 users have been reporting an issue where navigation maps cannot keep GPS locked on. Navigation maps such as Google Maps and Waze struggle to accurately track the position of the user. A GPS app developer reportedly says that GnssStatus stops reporting and none of the numbers change (C/N0).

According to user complaints on the internet, this issue is affecting a number of Samsung devices such as the Galaxy Note 8, Note 9, S8, and S9. However, the GPS tracking issue appears to be most prominent on the Galaxy S8 and Note 8. This is concerning for everyone because not being able to track your location is annoying and possibly dangerous. Countless individuals use GPS daily as part of their work, and this is affecting them greatly.

Luckily, there are a few solutions to this issue. Many users have reported different things they have tried that have fixed the issue for them. Here are some of the most effective ones.

  • Solutions to Galaxy S8 & Note 8 GPS Tracking Problem
    • #1. Toggle location off and on
    • #2. Improve GPS accuracy
    • #3. Disable power-saving mode
    • #4. Update Android version

Solutions to Galaxy S8 & Note 8 GPS Tracking Problem

There are a number of solutions that have reportedly fixed the issue. Please try the solutions below and let us know which one works for you.

#1. Toggle location off and on

Turning the location service off and on back again has proven to be the most useful to fix the GPS tracking issue. To do so, pull down the notification drawer and tap on Location. This will disable all GPS services. Now tap the button one more time to turn the GPS services on again.

#2. Improve GPS accuracy

There is a neat little feature that improves GPS accuracy. It is disabled by default so you have to enable it. Go to Settings -> Location. Tap on Improve accuracy. There are two options which can be enabled:

  • Wi-Fi scanning: Apps use WiFi to detect user location more accurately.
  • Bluetooth scanning: Similarly, apps use Bluetooth to detect the location more accurately.

Enable both options. This will improve GPS tracking and fix any issues most of the time.

#3. Disable power-saving mode

For some users, the key to the solution was to disable power saving mode while using any navigation maps. It looks like GPS apps are being affected by the phone’s power-saving mode, causing them to stop working properly. The solution is to simply turn off power saving mode when using GPS on your Note 8 or S8.

#4. Update Android version

The GPS issue started after a software update was released for Galaxy Note 8 and S8 users. Before the software update, there were no major issues with the GPS. Samsung will most likely release a software update to fix the issue very soon. So you need to check if you have any software updates available on your phone. Go to Settings -> Software update and tap on Download and Install. If there’s an eligible update, it will be automatically downloaded and installed.

These are the most effective fixes for this GPS issue. If you have another Samsung phone other than the Galaxy S8 or Note 8 with the same GPS issues, let us know below.

Samsung galaxy note 8 gps problem

All of sudden my phone constantly loses GPS signal which renders Navigation broken. It doesn't seem to resolve until after a reboot, but it will then crash again before too long. I thought maybe this issue corresponded with the recent Google Maps overhaul but I have confirmed that Waze will also not work when GPS signal is lost. Are there any known issues on this? Does this maybe point to my GPS receiver/antenna hardware going bad? TY!

Nope, this is happening to me too. After the most recent security patch, my phone was mint. I am very minimalistic on apps and this phone ALWAYS kicked butt. Never dropped nor has a scratch.

After the update: My phone lags 1 sec on random menus now and drops gps. How convenient?

level 1

YES thank God I thought I was the only one that was experiencing this; after the last update I keep having to close and open navigation everytime and its driving me insane.

At this point Google Maps is completely unusable on my end. Even scrolling through Instagram I can clearly tell (ex. when zooming into a picture) theres a 1 second lag to every action.

Seems like the issue is VZW only

level 2

Google FI for me... I route in Maps it shows as if its tracking but never actually follows my car along the route until i miss my turn and realize its not tracking..

Normally now i have to map my route then quit out and redo it. Lately sometimes it just never grabs that signal and i have to restart the app like 3 times.

level 1

Same is happening with me. Finally got tired of it and called for a warranty replacement. The replacement phone does the same thing. This is clearly an issue with the most recent update we received.

level 1

Interesting to hear of another with this issue. My battery healthy is down to 81% and I was thinking of getting it replaced by an authorized agent but now I am on hold until this GPS issue is resolved. Unless it's a hardware problem in which case I am not dumping any more money in to this phone.

level 2

Where did you get the battery health info?

level 2

I drive for deliveries and have to pull off about 3 times a day in a 4 hour period for a reboot.

level 1

This seems to be carrier related? I'm on Sprint and the GPS signal is accurate.

I'm guessing it's a radio firmware issue not hardware.

level 2

Verizon here WITH the issue

level 2

Verizon here with the issue. Hoping the AGPS reset works maybe something with the update screwed up the settings.

level 1

Glad you mentioned it, I'm having this issue on Verizon too, started recently and is driving me nuts, disabling/enabling location seems to be the workaround to get it going again, but doesn't help that they added some dumb prompt you have to ok when you turn location back on, all while driving.

level 2

I definitely need to try the Location toggle as you are one of a couple to mention it. Wilk have to reach out and pressure Verizon in case it's a their software problem.

level 1

Crazy, same issue with me on Verizon as well. GPS gets lost or just sits there as I drive, making me miss turns. Started happening sometime in the last couple weeks.

level 1

Make sure you don't have power saver on. If you do, GPS will work will your screen is on, but will stop when the screen shuts off. Outside of that, I've never had the issue you are referring to.

level 2

Is that the Adaptive Power Saving feature? I turned that off yesterday but today my GPS lost signal again.

level 1

I have this issue after the last update. It's horrible now.

level 1

Same problem, on VZW. going to try the GPS-status app

Everyone having the problem needs to contact Verizon so this ends up popping on their radar.
