Insurance may be able to cover your wheelchair ramp’s cost depending on your company and plan. Two common funding sources are Medicare and Medicaid.

Under the original Medicare, ramps are categorized as durable medical equipment (DME). However, even if a licensed physician deems them medically necessary, Medicare rarely covers the expenses. This reasoning stems from the fact that ramps do not treat a condition directly. Although its policies are strict, Medicare might reimburse your ramp if you meet certain requirements. Some Medicare Advantage (MA) plans — which vary by state — can cover your ramp’s cost if it’s confirmed as essential for reducing emergency care needs, compensating for functional limitations or preventing injury. You must also demonstrate the ability to maintain or improve your current health.

Medicaid can also cover your ramp. Benefits vary by program:

  • Regular Medicaid: Like Medicare, wheelchair ramps are only covered when medically necessary. Because ramps aren’t usually considered essential, this coverage route often requires winning a court case.
  • Home and Community-Based Services Waivers: Many states offer Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Waivers that pay for your ramp, which is considered a beneficial environmental adaptation or home modification.

You deserve to live your best life. If you prefer or need an alternative funding option, National Ramp has you covered. We’ve compiled a list of financing sources by state so you can choose one that’s right for you. You’ll find many state-based and non-profit assistance programs that will help you regain your freedom at an affordable price. We also offer ramp rentals that let you pay by the month. If you need a temporary mobility solution, renting a ramp will improve your quality of life while saving you money.

Whether you plan to use insurance or another funding source, having an accurate estimate is crucial. Your ramp’s price depends on numerous factors, including:

  • Ramp length.
  • The number of ramps you want to install.
  • Your chosen style and construction material.
  • Customization choices.

National Ramp makes it easy to estimate your wheelchair ramp’s cost — use our online calculator and receive a free quote in three easy steps. We’ll help you maximize your budget and develop the most practical financing plan.

How long should a ramp be for three steps?

A ten foot ramp is minimally suitable for most situations where you've got 3 steps to overcome and the rise is 20″ or less. Assistance would be needed for a person in a wheelchair to insure their safety.

What is the maximum slope for a ramp?

The maximum recommended slope of ramps is 1:20. Steeper slopes may be allowed in special cases depending on the length to be covered (fig. 4). Ramps should be provided with landings for resting, maneuvering and avoiding excessive speed.

Does Medi cal cover wheelchair ramps?

Alterations or improvements to real property, such as a non-portable wheelchair ramp, are not Medi-Cal benefits, except when authorized for home dialysis services. Claims for portable ramps must be billed with HCPCS code E1399 (durable medical equipment, miscellaneous).
