Two of the worst teams in the American League wrap up a two-game series Wednesday night as the Texas Rangers host the Oakland As. The As have the worst record in the American League at 51-91 while the Rangers are 62-80 and are probably playing worse than any team in the AL in recent weeks. The Rangers won the opener 8-7. The Rangers lead the season series 11-7. Game time Wednesday is 8:05 p.m. ET at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

A's coming off win over White Sox

The Oakland A's have been among the worst teams in baseball all season and it seems as if they are just going through the motions at this point. Since the start of September, the Athletics have lost 8 of 10 games. However, they came into this series having just scored a rare win, beating the red-hot White Sox 10-3. Cole Irvin gave the As a quality start, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits in 7 innings in the win. Tony Kemp and Vimael Machin each had 3 hits and 3 RBI for Oakland in the win, while Ramon Laureano added a home run and 2 RBI. However, the A's lost the series opener Tuesday to the Rangers 8-7.

JP Sears gets the start for the As on Wednesday. The left-hander is 5-2 on the season with a 3.33 ERA in 8 starts and 13 overall appearances. Sears has 33 strikeouts and 15 walks in 51.1 innings pitched. In his last outing, he got lit up for 6 runs on 8 hits in just 2 innings in a loss to the White Sox. He gave up 3 home runs in the game. Sears is 1-0 against the Rangers this season. He has not allowed any runs on 4 hits with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts in 5 innings against Texas. The As have a team ERA of 4.46, which ranks 24th in baseball. The As bullpen has an ERA of 4.33, which is 23rd in the majors.

Dunning goes for Rangers Wednesday

The Texas Rangers have gone into a tailspin in the second half of the season that has sent them tumbling down the standings in the AL West. How bad has it been? Well, over their last 17 games, they are 4-13. Any hope of making the wildcard round is now long gone. They come into this series having split two games with the Miami Marlins. They managed to win the opener against the A's though, 8-7. Dermis Garcia had a home run and 4 RBI while Chad Pinder had 3 hits and 3 RBI. The Rangers average 4.45 runs per game, which ranks 13th in baseball. They are 15th in team batting average, 8th in home runs, and 13th in slugging percentage. Corey Seager leads the Rangers batting .246 with 30 home runs and 76 RBI while Nathaniel Lowe is hitting .308 with 24 home runs and 69 RBI.

Dane Dunning gets the start for the Rangers on Wednesday. The right-hander is 3-8 on the season with a 4.39 ERA in 27 starts. Dunning has 124 strikeouts and 58 walks in 143.2 innings pitched. In his last outing, he got a no-decision in a 4-3 loss to Toronto. He gave up 3 runs on 7 hits in 5.2 innings with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. Dunning is 1-0 record with an ERA of 3.48 and 9 strikeouts in 2 appearances against Oakland this season. In his career he 1-0 with an ERA of 2.70 and 18 strikeouts in 5 appearances against the A's. The Rangers have a team ERA of 4.17, which ranks 21st in baseball. The Rangers bullpen has an ERA of 3.72, which is 12th best in the majors.

Something has got to give in this game. Two really bad teams playing bad baseball go head to head and someone will walk away with the dub. The other thing is, these are two struggling pitchers, so there's really no advantage between the two starters. I'll favor the Rangers for a few reasons -- one, they are home, where they have been slightly more successful over the last few weeks. Two, they have a far better offense than Oakland, so they have the firepower to win a game where there is no pitcher advantage. And three, they actually have a decent bullpen to nail it down. Take the Rangers here on the money line.

Prediction: Texas -155

I just don't get the total here set at 8.5. These two teams played Tuesday and they scored a combined 15 runs. Oakland has a terrible offense, but Texas has some sluggers and they are an offense that ranks in the top half of the league. Sears has been good here and there, but he has been inconsistent and is coming off a bad outing last time out. Texas should tee off here. And Oakland's offense has been better as of late, averaging 4.5 runs per game in their last 10 and they face a struggling pitcher in Dunning.  So, I love this to blow past the total. Take the over here.

Prediction: Over 8.5
